Singapore investment research should match the actual institution, licence type and activity in official MAS information. A Singapore address or a copied institution name is insufficient.
Directory and alert list serve different purposes
MAS’s Financial Institutions Directory lets readers search institutions, licence types and activities. Its Investor Alert List concerns parties or offers that may have been wrongly perceived as authorised or associated with MAS.
MAS states that the alert list is not exhaustive. Absence from it is therefore not evidence that a platform is licensed.
Pay attention to changes in warning practices
MAS’s alert-list page says it will no longer publish the names and online identifiers of entities impersonating MAS-regulated institutions there. It instead stresses verifying identity and using official channels.
This makes a simple ‘not on the warning list’ badge particularly weak. A genuine directory record and contact verification are more useful than a negative search alone.
Match five pieces of the offer
| Piece | Verification question |
|---|---|
| Name | Exact institution or a lookalike? |
| Activity | Does the listed permission cover the service? |
| Contact | Does the offer use genuine channels? |
| Product | What contract and payoff are actually offered? |
| Customer | Are restrictions relevant to this person? |
A familiar institution can be impersonated
Suppose a message cites a real institution in the directory but asks for funds through an unrelated website. The institution’s existence does not authenticate the message.
Contact the real organisation using independently obtained details. Do not use the phone number or verification link supplied in the suspicious conversation as the sole confirmation channel.
A product label is not a legal analysis
‘Digital option’, ‘AI trading’ and ‘fixed return’ describe marketing or mechanics, but do not determine the applicable regulatory classification by themselves. Obtain the actual agreement and identify who issues or arranges the contract.
This article does not declare a particular platform authorised or make a blanket ruling on every binary structure. Those conclusions require a current, product-specific assessment.
Organise a concern before reporting it
Preserve the message, website, claimed institution, payment destination, dates and account records. Distinguish a genuine firm’s record from the potentially unrelated person using its name.
If credentials were exposed, secure them through a trusted route. For a payment concern, contact the relevant provider promptly and use genuine official reporting channels. No alert-list result guarantees compensation or a successful recovery.
A repeatable MAS directory check
- Find the contracting institution. Read the account terms and identify the full legal name. A brand can operate through several companies; a record for one company does not answer a question about another.
- Navigate independently to the directory. Use the official MAS website and Financial Institutions Directory rather than an advertisement’s “verify licence” button.
- Search by institution, licence or activity. Open the relevant result and record the exact name and listed status. Compare the advertised service with the actual activity information.
- Check the person and communication channel. Use independently established contact details to ask whether the specific website, representative and offer belong to the institution.
- Save the evidence and date. Keep the directory address, relevant result details and unresolved questions. Recheck when the contract party or service changes.
This is a research process rather than a platform recommendation. Finding a licensed institution does not establish that an unsolicited offer is genuine, that every product bearing its name is covered, or that an investment cannot lose money.
Three illustrative cases that require different answers
A genuine name with an unrelated website
A messaging account cites an institution that appears in the directory and sends a link to a similarly spelled domain. Treat identity as unresolved until the genuine institution confirms that domain through an independent channel. A copied logo, real office address and authentic licence number can all appear in a fabricated offer.
A listed company offering a different service
Suppose a promoter points to a directory entry associated with one financial activity while selling a fixed-outcome contract through a separate agreement. The entry alone does not resolve the mismatch. Obtain the actual contract, ask who issues or arranges it, and identify the permission the promoter relies on. Avoid interpreting the mere presence of any licence as permission for every financial service.
A foreign group with a Singapore partner
The group website highlights a Singapore company, but the account agreement names an overseas partner. Record the overseas party as the contracting entity and examine the actual relationship. Do not transfer the Singapore partner’s status to another company because the two share a brand or parent. Any cross-border permission question needs its own current assessment.
Build a useful evidence worksheet
| Evidence item | Record to retain |
|---|---|
| Agreement | Contracting name, version, date and jurisdiction wording |
| Directory result | Exact institution, listed status/activity and search date |
| Offer identity | Domain, app publisher, email address and claimed representative |
| Independent confirmation | Official channel used and answer to the specific offer question |
| Outstanding gap | What has not been established, and who can clarify it |
Store sensitive identifiers privately. If sharing a concern publicly, redact account numbers and personal documents. A concise timeline is more useful than a folder of unsorted screenshots: show what was promised, what was paid, what happened next and which party communicated each statement.
Questions readers ask
Does absence from the MAS Investor Alert List mean approval?
No. MAS describes the list as non-exhaustive. Its current impersonation notice also directs readers to verify genuine institution identities and channels. A negative search should never substitute for a positive permission and identity check.
Does a directory entry guarantee a withdrawal?
No. A directory search answers a regulatory-record question. Payment performance, the contract’s conditions and the identity of the person receiving funds are separate matters. A screenshot of a balance is not evidence of a completed bank credit.
Is a Singapore office address enough?
No. Establish the legal entity and relevant activity through official information. The physical address in an advertisement does not explain who owes the contractual payoff or which permission is being relied upon.
Should I send account codes to a verification agent?
Do not disclose passwords or one-time codes to someone contacting you privately. Verify the organisation independently and use its genuine secure support process. For an existing payment concern, see our withdrawal evidence guides and preserve transaction references before escalating through appropriate channels.
