Trading Account Base Currency: Conversion, Statements and Comparable Results

The currency used to record an account balance can differ from the currency used to fund it or receive a withdrawal. Keep those stages separate before calculating costs or comparing performance.

Identify three currencies, not one

Write down the source-payment currency, account base currency and receiving currency. A currency symbol on a trading screen describes the account’s presentation; it does not prove that the funding provider used the same conversion rate.

Before opening or changing an account, read whether the currency choice can be changed and what process applies. Do not assume that every platform supports a simple conversion of an existing account.

An original funding example

Suppose a payment source is debited 8,500 local units and the account receives US$100. The effective funding rate is 85 local units per credited dollar before separating any explicit fees.

If a reference rate at that time was 84, it would be misleading to compare the 8,500 debit directly with a later receiving amount without identifying the different rate and dates. This example is arithmetic, not a current exchange-rate quote.

Separate conversion from trading performance

Ledger Record
Funding Source debit, credited amount and fees
Trading Net results in the account currency
Withdrawal Account debit and destination amount
Conversion Applied rate, timestamp and provider

A positive trading result can coexist with a smaller home-currency receipt after fees or rate changes. That does not mean every difference was a trading loss.

Comparing two accounts requires a convention

Choose a common reporting currency and state which conversion basis is used. A period-end translation answers a different question from converting each cash flow at its transaction-date rate.

Do not silently choose whichever convention makes the result look better. Preserve both the original-currency records and the translated summary so another reader can reconstruct the comparison.

Provider documentation can differ from a headline

Deriv’s payment material notes that funding in a currency different from the Wallet currency may involve provider conversion charges. Other providers use their own terms and limits.

This supports checking the actual route; it does not establish a universal conversion fee. Ask which party sets the rate and what net amount the confirmation screen represents.

A practical decision checklist

Check supported currencies, funding and receiving routes, conversion costs, statement access and any account-change restrictions. Keep identity and destination ownership consistent with the applicable payment rules.

Do not choose a currency because a promoter claims it increases win probability. Base currency changes accounting and conversions; it does not make a price-direction forecast more accurate.

Account currency is different from an instrument’s currency

A USD account can contain an instrument whose name includes two other currencies. The account currency is the unit used for the ledger; the instrument specification determines how its price changes translate into profit or loss. Do not infer contract size or point value merely from the currency symbol next to the account balance.

For a fixed-outcome contract, use the actual stake and accepted payoff in the stated currency. For a CFD, check volume, contract size and any required profit-currency conversion. A percentage return should identify its denominator: a percentage of stake, account equity and home-currency funding are different measures.

A complete round-trip example

Extend the earlier fictional funding example: 8,500 local units buy a credited US$100. Assume the entire account then produces a US$10 net trading profit, leaving US$110, with no additional deposits or open positions. On withdrawal, suppose a separately stated US$2 fee leaves US$108 for conversion, and the applied receiving rate is 82 local units per dollar.

The destination receives 108 times 82, or 8,856 local units. The account’s trading gain was 10%, while the home-currency cash gain is 356 divided by 8,500, approximately 4.19%. These describe different parts of the same invented example. Neither 82 nor 85 is a current market quotation, and the US$2 fee is not a provider specification.

Stage Illustrative amount What it explains
Source debit 8,500 local units Total starting cash outflow
Account credit US$100 Funding rate of 85 local units per credited dollar
Trading result +US$10 Performance recorded in account currency
Withdrawal fee US$2 Separate deduction before conversion
Destination credit 8,856 local units Actual receiving amount at the assumed rate

Use actual statements to reconstruct a real case. If a fee is already included in the source debit or net receiving rate, do not subtract it again. Where an amount is unknown, label it unknown instead of treating the entire difference as a hidden broker charge.

What “no conversion fee” can leave unanswered

The cited Deriv regional payment page distinguishes a possible payment-provider conversion charge from Deriv’s own additional conversion fees. This is a scoped provider statement, not a universal tariff for all account entities or payment routes. A fee headline alone also does not tell you the exact rate applied, the quotation time or the destination bank’s deductions.

Ask for the currency pair, rate direction, amount converted, explicit fees and expected net credit. Save the confirmation and compare it with the completed transaction. A mid-market rate shown on a public website can be a comparison reference, but it is not automatically the executable rate offered by a payment provider.

Check currency-change restrictions before funding

IQ Option’s official deposit guide, updated in February 2026, says local-currency deposits are converted to the account currency and that the account currency cannot be changed after a deposit. This is an example of why the initial selection matters. Check the applicable current account terms rather than assuming another provider follows the same rule.

Do not open duplicate accounts or move funds through an unrelated recipient to work around a restriction. Ask genuine support what authorised process applies, whether a different account is available and which records or balances are affected. Keep the original statements before any permitted change.

Frequently asked questions

Does choosing USD make trading more accurate?

No. The currency choice changes the ledger and possible conversion exposure. It does not improve a directional forecast or alter the underlying contract’s winning condition.

Can the deposit and withdrawal rates be different?

Yes. They can occur at different times and involve different providers or conversion directions. Compare each completed cash flow with its own date, quoted rate and deductions.

How should I compare two currency accounts?

Retain each original ledger and state a consistent translation method. Keep deposits and withdrawals separate from gains. If there are multiple cash flows, a simple ending-balance comparison cannot by itself establish an investment return.

Is the converted summary suitable for tax filing?

It is an evidence worksheet, not a tax calculation. Applicable reporting rules may specify their own currency and conversion convention. Preserve the underlying statements so the required calculation can be prepared accurately.
