Segregation, deposit insurance and investor compensation describe different arrangements. None should be inferred merely because a broker uses the words secure funds or regulated.
Define the protection being claimed
Segregation generally concerns how client assets or money are held apart from a firm’s own resources under an applicable framework. A compensation arrangement concerns specified eligible claims if its conditions are met.
Neither description establishes that a particular provider actually complies or that a specific loss is covered. Identify the applicable rules and evidence first.
Do not confuse investment loss with a covered failure
A losing contract is not automatically a claim under a compensation scheme. Coverage can depend on the firm, customer, product, failure event, jurisdiction and exclusions.
For an illustration, an arrangement intended to address a firm’s inability to return eligible client money would answer a different question from whether an unsuccessful price forecast should be refunded. Read the actual scheme terms rather than extrapolating.
A claims-review matrix
| Statement | Required follow-up |
|---|---|
| Funds are segregated | Which entity, rules and supporting evidence? |
| Money is insured | Who is insured, by whom and against what? |
| Compensation is available | Eligibility, event, limit and exclusions? |
| A bank holds funds | Whose legal claim exists against that bank? |
Why the account’s entity matters
A group may operate several companies with different frameworks. The website’s description of one entity’s protections cannot simply be applied to an account contracted elsewhere.
Find the company in the accepted agreement, then match the protection source to that company. An overseas licence claim also does not establish local protection for every customer.
Check precise wording before comparing providers
Avoid a yes/no ‘funds protected’ column when the underlying arrangements differ. State the named arrangement, source date, applicable entity and unresolved eligibility questions.
If a provider supplies only a promotional sentence without supporting terms, label the claim unverified. Do not invent an audit, bank confirmation or insurance certificate that has not been examined.
What this research can establish
It can distinguish documented protection claims and identify missing evidence. It cannot predict a future insolvency distribution or decide an individual compensation application.
Use official regulator and scheme materials for a particular claim. This article deliberately gives no universal coverage amount, because a number without the correct framework and eligibility conditions would mislead.
A UK framework example, not a universal broker guarantee
The FCA’s client-money and assets material explains the CASS framework for firms within its scope. Segregation is one part of a regulatory framework; a provider’s promotional sentence does not establish that the framework applies to your account or that the firm complies with it.
The FSCS investment-protection page separately describes conditions for investment claims and says it cannot accept claims for poor investment performance. This is a UK scheme example. It does not establish coverage for an offshore account, an unrelated group company or a product outside the relevant protection.
Four different events that need separate analysis
| Event | Main question | Evidence to obtain |
|---|---|---|
| A contract loses money | Was this the contract’s specified investment outcome? | Accepted terms and settlement record |
| A provider cannot return client money | Which legal holding and failure framework applies? | Entity, client-money terms and official failure information |
| A bank holding funds fails | Whose claim exists and what deposit rules apply? | Account structure and applicable scheme conditions |
| A stranger impersonates a firm | Was the recipient connected to the genuine organisation? | Independent identity and payment evidence |
These events can overlap, but they should not be treated as equivalent. The same reassuring badge cannot answer all four questions. Establish the actual facts before assuming a route to reimbursement exists.
A fictional two-entity comparison
Imagine a group has one company whose client-money statement refers to a specific regulated framework, while an overseas partner provides a different agreement. A customer signs with the partner. The first company’s statement is not automatically evidence of protection under the partner’s contract.
Write the exact contracting company beside every protection claim. If the website changes the onboarding entity according to residence, keep the agreement actually offered to that customer. A screenshot from another person’s onboarding journey may concern a different arrangement.
What to ask when “segregated funds” is the entire explanation
- Which legal entity receives or holds the customer’s money?
- Which rules and contractual terms govern that holding?
- What money is included, and are any relevant exclusions stated?
- What publicly verifiable evidence supports the claim?
- What complaint or failure process applies to this entity and service?
A firm may not publish account-level banking or audit information to every reader. Record that evidence limit rather than inventing verification. “Provider states that funds are segregated” and “independently checked compliance” are different conclusions.
Insurance language needs its own evidence
If a company says money is insured, identify the insured party, insurer, covered event, limits and exclusions. A policy covering the firm’s operational risks is not automatically a policy reimbursing every customer. Likewise, a named bank holding funds does not by itself explain the customer’s legal relationship with that bank.
This guide does not assume a specific insurance arrangement exists. Its purpose is to make a vague claim testable. Retain the exact wording and ask for the applicable document through genuine support rather than relying on a salesperson’s paraphrase.
Compare protections without reducing them to a score
A useful comparison states the entity, named framework, official source, date checked and unresolved eligibility conditions. Keep protection claims apart from execution quality, withdrawal experience and product risk. None can substitute for the others.
Do not copy a headline compensation amount across deposits, investments and other categories. The relevant scheme can use different rules for different claims. Establish the category first, then check the current limit and conditions with the scheme itself.
Frequently asked questions
Does segregation stop a losing trade?
No. Holding arrangements do not change a contract’s payoff or prevent a market loss. Read the actual product’s risk and settlement terms.
Does a licence establish every protection automatically?
No. Match the entity, activity and applicable client arrangements. Use our regulatory research hub for the permission checks.
Does compensation cover poor investment performance?
The cited FSCS investment page specifically excludes claims for poor performance. Other questions require the applicable scheme’s actual rules; this article does not decide an individual claim.
What if a withdrawal is delayed but the firm has not failed?
Document the transaction and use genuine support and complaint routes. A delay alone does not establish an insolvency or scheme entitlement. Our withdrawal research hub explains the records to retain.

A. Segregation: holding arrangement
Identified client arrangement
Own operating funds
Conceptual separation, not proof of a particular firm’s bank arrangements or compliance. Verify the actual entity, applicable client-money rules, account terms and supporting evidence.
B. Compensation: eligibility and protected claim
Check the applicable scheme’s coverage conditions.
Eligibility and exclusions require their own checks.
Apply the actual trigger, limits and claims process.
Do not infer scheme coverage from a segregation statement. Compensation is not a general guarantee against market losses. No named broker’s eligibility is established by this visual.
This is a conceptual distinction, not an eligibility decision or assurance of recovery. For a UK illustration, consult the FCA client-money rules and FSCS investment coverage conditions; other jurisdictions have their own rules.
